The largest of the new pavilions on Hoag’s expanded Irvine campus opens, advancing surgical care with state-of-the-art operating rooms, cutting-edge technology, and welcoming spaces for patients, families, and staff.

The Surgical Pavilion on the Hoag Hospital Irvine Sun Family Campus opened May 4, marking a milestone in surgical care at Hoag. At 130,000 square feet, it’s the largest new building on campus and the first new pavilion to welcome patients. With advanced technology, expanded capacity, and design focused on the full care experience, the Surgical Pavilion sets a new standard for surgical care at Hoag.
“The Surgical Pavilion represents a tremendous leap forward for our patients and our clinical teams,” says Marcy Brown, senior vice president and chief operations officer. “By combining state-of-the-art operating rooms, advanced robotics, and a healing-centered intensive care unit, we’ve created an environment where innovation and compassion work hand in hand. This facility gives our surgeons the tools and space they need to deliver the highest level of care, and it reflects Hoag’s ongoing commitment to investing in the future of medicine.”
Inside the Making
The Surgical Pavilion came to life over a 31-month construction timeline shaped by 492,000 hours of work. The building
connects the Du Family Hospital Pavilion across every level through seven connection points, seamlessly integrating care across
the campus. Each of the eight operating rooms spans 830 square feet, designed for surgical precision and team collaboration during procedures. Across the facade, 19,000 square feet of windows bring in natural light, while 3,600 square feet of outdoor seating create space for rest and reflection. The building also introduces the first-ever discharge lounge on the Hoag Hospital Irvine Sun Family Campus, supporting a smooth transition from hospital to home.

A Space for Healing and Teamwork
Every corner of the pavilion is designed with people in mind. Visitor lounges offer comfort and reassurance to loved ones, while staff lounges and outdoor courtyards provide spaces to recharge.
The state-of-the-art operating rooms, including a hybrid operating room (opening at a later date), allow Hoag surgeons to perform more complex procedures with greater precision. Integrated technology and thoughtful layouts support collaboration, speed decision-making, and enhance patient outcomes. “That’s important: having great staff, great equipment, and great space to provide you with better care,” said Burak Ozgur, MD, neurosurgeon and director of the Hoag Spine Institute.
Jack Sun, MD, director of cardiovascular surgery at the Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute, also emphasized: “As a surgeon, I’m excited about these new operating rooms. They allow us to do more advanced surgeries.”
The Surgical Pavilion represents a major milestone for the Hoag Hospital Irvine Sun Family Campus and a leap forward in the field of surgical care. Its opening was made possible by generous donor support, and contributions to the Boldly Hoag campaign continue to fund the expansion of the campus, helping Hoag deliver leading-edge care for the community today and for years to come.
