Restorative Spaces: Supporting Staff on Hoag’s Sun Family Campus

A Hoag Hospital Foundation Board member’s gift toward Hoag’s Irvine expansion is creating spaces where staff can recharge and find respite.

Hoag Hospital Foundation Board Treasurer, Kyle Wescoat

When Hoag Hospital Foundation Board member Kyle Wescoat thinks about Hoag’s expansion in Irvine, one thing stands out: the exceptional medical and support teams providing the care.

A volunteer since 2008, during the establishment of Hoag’s Irvine hospital, Kyle has seen firsthand how philanthropy shapes health care—especially during those early days through his chairmanship of the former Hoag Irvine/Orthopedic Institute Campaign Advisory Committee. Now, as Treasurer of the Hoag Hospital Foundation Board and a strong advocate for physician, nurse, and clinical staff wellbeing, he’s focused on ensuring that those who care for others are supported in return.

Through his generous gift supporting Hoag’s Irvine expansion, a key focus of the Boldly Hoag campaign, two staff lounges on the new Sun Family Campus will recognize his generosity: the Wescoat Family Staff Lounge in the Benjamin & Carmela Du Emergency Pavilion and the Wescoat Family Staff Lounge in the Hoag Orthopedic Institute.

“Supporting these spaces is a way to show our appreciation for the tireless efforts of our exceptional medical and support staff who are always there for Hoag’s patients and the community,” Kyle said.

These rooms offer essential respite for Hoag’s dedicated staff as places to connect, pause, recharge, and refuel from the demands of the health care profession.

Across the Sun Family Campus, staff areas have been intentionally designed to enhance and complement their workdays. Kyle’s gift is part of a broader vision to elevate the environments that support Hoag’s frontline health workers—recognizing their wellbeing as critical to delivering exceptional care.

Another such space is the Trish & Mike Berchtold Staff Lounge & Courtyard within the Surgical Pavilion. Named in honor of the Berchtolds’ generous giving, this lounge reflects their ongoing commitment to nurturing the Hoag teams that make exceptional care happen. Trish, who served on the Hoag Hospital Foundation Board alongside Kyle, began her career in nursing, giving her valuable insight into health care. Inspired by Trish’s nursing experience and her father’s career as a general surgeon, both she and Mike are deeply motivated to support the doctors, nurses, and staff at Hoag.

The Sun Family Campus marks a new chapter for Hoag, expanding access to world-class care to people across Orange County with state-of-the-art facilities including the Surgical Pavilion, Laboratory & Logistics Pavilion, and dedicated buildings for women’s, digestive, and cancer care.

“Hoag’s mission is to provide world-class health care to all, throughout the Orange County community,” Kyle said. “And the wellbeing of our medical professionals and staff is an integral part of delivering on that mission.”

A longtime financial executive who has served as CFO for several industry-leading Orange County companies, including Vizio, Vans, and Emulex, Kyle has long believed in the responsibility to give back. His philanthropic mindset has guided his service on multiple nonprofit boards and now drives his commitment to Hoag’s mission.

“Hoag is the most recognized and acclaimed health care provider between San Diego and Los Angeles, and for good reason: the generosity of our Orange County community,” Kyle said.

“The kindheartedness of Hoag’s donors is amazing. Philanthropy has become an essential part of Hoag’s efforts to increase and enhance its health care footprint and services throughout Orange County.”
