Physician Leaders Share Vision for Hoag's Sun Family Campus in Irvine
Endowed chairs Allyson Brooks, MD, Kenneth Chang, MD, and Steven Grossman, MD, PhD, discuss innovation and patient-centered care at Hoag in media roundtable discussion.
Hoag’s Sun Family Campus in Irvine is undergoing a major expansion, building new state-of-the-art facilities for cancer and digestive care, women’s health, and advanced surgical innovation. In a recent roundtable discussion, three of Hoag’s endowed chairs and executive medical directors—Allyson Brooks, MD, Kenneth Chang, MD, and Steven Grossman, MD, PhD—shared how Hoag’s expansion on the Sun Family campus in Irvine is shaping the next chapter of patient care and medical innovation. The conversation, covered by the Orange County Register, highlighted the physicians’ shared commitment to advancing specialized, compassionate healthcare through comprehensive programs, research, and collaboration.
Kenneth Chang, MD, James & Pamela Muzzy Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair in GI Cancer, Digestive Health Institute, underscored the urgent need for progress in gastrointestinal care:
“While most cancers are stable or declining, esophageal cancer in the last 40 years has risen tenfold. So clearly, we have an unmet need.” He described new initiatives to close that gap, including an advanced GI endoscopy fellowship that was recently launched—and is philanthropically supported by the Muzzy family—and an upcoming foregut surgery fellowship.
Allyson Brooks, MD, Ginny Ueberroth Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair, Women’s Health Institute, emphasized care designed “for women, by women.”
“The Sun Family Campus is more than a facility…It’s a place where, for many decades to come, women are going to be able to get comprehensive healthcare at all the different stages of their life.”
Steven Grossman, MD, PhD, Grace E. Hoag Executive Medical Director Endowed Chair, Hoag Family Cancer Institute, previewed a first-of-its-kind model of support for cancer patients that will be available only on Hoag’s Sun Family Campus:
“One very unique service we’re going to be offering in cancer is our 24-hour oncology urgent care center… Our facility is going to be open to everybody.”
The discussion offered a glimpse into how Hoag’s physician leaders, along with its expansion on the Sun Family Campus in Irvine, are aligning innovation and expertise to expand access and elevate patient care across all specialties.
