Hoag’s Landmark Expansion Ushers in a New Era for Mothers and Newborns

Hoag’s new Women’s Hospital in Irvine is opening in September, complete with expanded birthing suites and a 17-bed NICU.

As California’s busiest maternity hospital, Hoag has long set the standard for maternity care in Orange County. In September, its commitment to mothers and babies reaches new heights with the opening of a state-of-the-art Women’s Hospital on the Hoag Hospital Irvine Sun Family Campus. The transformed campus marks the largest expansion in Hoag history and a profound investment in families throughout our community. With increased capabilities, Hoag anticipates a rise in annual births from 9,000 to 12,000 by 2028.

The new hospital will feature 24 LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum) suites, 21 antepartum/postpartum rooms, a dedicated OB triage for patients who may otherwise have gone to the emergency department, and six specialty birthing suites designed for midwives and doulas—including built-in tubs for families who have incorporated water into their birth plans. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered, from the patient experience to the clinical capabilities, honoring the personalized, family-centered care Hoag is known for.

Central to the expansion is a new 17-bed NICU, which will be closely followed by the opening of a reimagined NICU at Hoag Hospital Newport Beach in October. Together, these additions will bring Hoag’s combined NICU capacity to 50 beds, reducing critical transfers to other facilities. A new infant cooling program, used to treat brain injuries from a lack of blood or oxygen during difficult deliveries, will further expand Hoag's neonatal care capabilities, ensuring that even the most vulnerable newborns receive specialized treatment close to home. With 35% of Hoag patients at an advanced maternal age of 35 years or older, more women are navigating high-risk pregnancies and premature deliveries than ever before.

Advanced programming on the Hoag Hospital Irvine Sun Family Campus will extend to the Women’s Outpatient Pavilion, connected to the hospital by a beautifully landscaped indoor garden and atrium. The pavilion will house additional maternal-fetal medicine services, a new Comprehensive Breast Center, and integrated clinical and wellness programs for women at every stage of life.
