Hoag Innovators Fuel Groundbreaking “X-Ray Vision” Technology in Interventional Radiology

Hoag’s new augmented reality technology achieves multiple firsts, redefining precision in minimally invasive care.

Hoag has become the first hospital on the West Coast and the first non-academic hospital in the world to offer MediView’s XR90 augmented reality (AR) 3D procedural navigation system. This transformative “X-ray vision” technology gives clinicians unprecedented real-time 3D visualization and precision during minimally invasive procedures. This advancement was made possible with a philanthropic investment from Hoag Innovators, a group of entrepreneurs, community leaders, and philanthropists who drive innovation through collective giving.

“This marks a significant milestone for Hoag’s interventional radiology team and heralds the profound impact that AR-guided navigation will have on patient care,” said Alexander Misono, MD, MBA, RPVI, chief of interventional radiology at Hoag’s Sun Family Campus in Irvine.

MediView’s system combines detailed CT imaging with live ultrasound, creating a 3D “X-ray vision” of internal anatomy beneath the skin, and tracks interventional tools in real time. This allows clinicians to navigate challenging procedures with greater accuracy, potentially making interventions faster and safer for patients.

Hoag’s interventional radiology team achieved other global firsts using this new technology, including performing procedures in a minor procedure room rather than a traditional angiography suite and completing a complex spleen procedure guided by AR navigation.

These advances demonstrate the system’s potential to expand access to care, enhance workflow, and reduce costs. Thousands of patients each year rely on Hoag’s interventional radiology team for procedures requiring pinpoint precision.

“This new technology represents one of the most significant advancements in ultrasound-guided interventional radiology in more than a decade,” Dr. Misono added.
