Golden anniversary gala raised $1.5 million in support of Hoag Promise, Our Campaign to Lead, Innovate & Transform
Hoag Hospital Foundation was joined by more than 640 of Hoag’s family of supporters, volunteers and friends at the Monarch Beach Resort to celebrate the 50th Annual Christmas Carol Ball on Saturday, December 10, 2016. This year’s Ball raised just under $1.5 million to support Hoag.
The Christmas Carol Ball started in 1966 as the Voices of Christmas, an event featuring dozens of A-list Hollywood actors and performers who gathered at the Balboa Bay Club to sing Christmas carols and read poetry. The fundraiser was originally in Santa Monica but 552 Club booster, Marshall Duffield, who had his share of Hollywood connections, convinced the group to bring the show south for an encore performance benefiting Hoag. Several of Hoag’s celebrity supporters got on board. Harry Babbitt sang, Buddy Epsen tap-danced, Andy Devine read “Twas the night before Christmas” and John Wayne recited a poem.
Saturday night, guests were led in a surprise sing-along by the descendants of the original Voices of Christmas Ball celebrants. Son of legendary actor John Wayne, Ethan Wayne; Al Auer’s daughter, Allison Kearns; and Marshall Duffield’s son, Duffy Duffield did a recreation of an iconic photo of their fathers singing around the piano at one of the first Voice of Christmas events.
“The Christmas Carol Ball has a unique and rich history of support from our community. Some of our guests have attended the Ball for all 50 years! This is a true testament of our community’s dedication to Hoag and its mission. We are forever grateful for the event founders, supporters, guests and volunteers who have made this a tradition for half a century,” said Flynn A. Andrizzi, Ph.D., president of the Hoag Hospital Foundation.
This year’s Christmas Carol Ball was chaired by Karen Linden and Cindy Stokke. “We are honored to serve as the 2016 co-chairs for the golden anniversary of this important philanthropic tradition. Tonight, we have collectively raised nearly $1.5 million for the Hoag Promise Campaign,” said Linden and Stokke. They added that the Hoag Promise Campaign has raised $428 million to-date, bringing the Hoag Hospital Foundation to 68 percent of its $627 million goal by 2020.
Cindy Stokke is presently chair of the Hoag Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and serves as a member of the Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Board of Directors. Member and former Hoag Hospital Foundation Board of Directors Chair, Karen Linden, currently serves as chair of the Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian Board of Directors as well as a member of the Hoag Promise Campaign Leadership Council and the Hoag Family Cancer Institute Campaign Advisory Committee.
A lavish dinner prepared by Executive Chef Collin Thornton was served, followed by a live “Dancing Through the Decades” show by the energetic band, NRG. Guests danced the night away, many leaving with silent auction items. Several guests participated in the adopt-a-family holiday drive by bringing an unwrapped toy or gift for families supported by Share Our Selves (SOS) of Orange County.
