2018 Choose Nursing, Choose Hoag Luncheon

Celebrating Hoag Nurses and the Donors Who Support Them

The Hoag Hospital Foundation awarded long-time Hoag philanthropists and volunteer leaders Joan and Andy Fimiano with its Choose Nursing, Choose Hoag Hall of Fame award at the Choose Nursing, Choose Hoag luncheon held on November 15, 2018, at the Balboa Bay Resort. The annual tradition gathered 300 donors, nurses and physicians, along with academic and corporate partners, to honor Hoag nurses and the donors who support their higher educational goals.

“We have the pleasure of honoring Joan and Andy Fimiano for their generous commitment to ensuring we have the best and brightest nurses at Hoag,” said Flynn A. Andrizzi, Ph.D., president, Hoag Hospital Foundation. “Joan and Andy were first inspired to support Hoag after a personal experience led them to make a transformational gift, which we were proud to recognize with the naming of the Joan & Andy Fimiano Emergency Pavilion. They went on to establish the Joan & Andy Fimiano Orthopedic Nursing and Emergency Department Nursing Scholarship Endowments.”

Andy lends his expertise to the Hoag Hospital Foundation Board and recently served as the chair of the Finance Committee.

“Our commitment to nursing was instilled in us by our mothers,” said Joan Fimiano. “They both volunteered at a local hospital and they took great pride in their association with the doctors and nurses. From experience, I can say that our nurses are the heart of Hoag. We take great pride in supporting them and their educational goals.”

Rick Martin, Ed.D., M.S.N., R.N., senior vice president of Clinical Operations and chief nursing officer at Hoag, also thanked Hoag nursing donors and underwriters. “Thank you for your contributions and all the work you do so these extraordinary nurses can earn their education and can continue to serve you and serve the community,” he said.

As a direct result of community support, Hoag awarded 298 nursing scholarships in 2018 for a total of 2,318 scholarships since the inception of Choose Nursing, Choose Hoag in 2004. As of now, 76 percent of Hoag nurses have a bachelor’s degree or higher. We are closing in on the 80 percent required to maintain Magnet status after 2020.

Attendees were treated to a video featuring the unique story of the Champieux family, a mother and three sons, all of whom are nurses at Hoag. To view the video please click here.
