The evening honored outstanding volunteer leaders and philanthropic partners with the Vin Jorgensen Awards.
Almost a year to the date of the public kick-off of Hoag Promise, Our Campaign to Lead, Innovate and Transform, more than 300 donors, physicians, staff and friends gathered at the Newport Beach Country Club for the 2016 Donor Appreciation & Awards Dinner.
“This is one of my favorite events because it’s our chance to thank you,” said Flynn A. Andrizzi, Ph.D., president of Hoag Hospital Foundation. “You’re the donors who are helping Hoag provide outstanding and innovative care. We’re also here to recognize and acknowledge our dedicated volunteer leaders. They have lent their time, talent and energy to serving the community through service to Hoag.”
Andrizzi shared that as of September 2016, the Hoag Promise Campaign has raised $420 million of the $627 million goal by 2020. “In other words, we have 1,553 days, 5 hours and 15 minutes to raise $207 million,” he said to much applause.
The evening also included an update on the impressive strides that Hoag is making in health care through presentations made by Tony Caffarelli, M.D., co-director of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute, and his grateful patient and Hoag Hospital Foundation donor and volunteer, Danni Sun as well as by Alberto Mendivil, M.D., gynecological oncologist and his grateful patients, Jennifer and Tom Yee.
Robert Braithwaite thanked Dr. Cafarelli and Dr. Mendivil for their service to Hoag. “You got a little bit of insight into the great doctors here at Hoag and we consider it an honor and a privilege to work with them.”
He then introduced the Vin Jorgensen awards, which were established in 1992 to honor the memory of one of Hoag’s most distinguished volunteers. Vin Jorgensen served as a member of the Hoag Hospital Board of Directors from its founding until his passing in 1988. He was also one of the founding members of the 552 Club.

• Trudi Bonnet for the 552 Club Vin Jorgensen Award
• VIZIO for the Corporate Partnership Vin Jorgensen Award, accepted by William Wang
• Bethany Knapp for the Circle 1000 Vin Jorgensen Award
• Pei-yuan Chia and Katherine Shen for the Hoag Hospital Foundation Board Vin Jorgensen Award
• Otis Healy for the Campaign Volunteer Leader Vin Jorgensen Award
At the closing of the evening, Andrizzi said, “On behalf of everyone at Hoag and the Hoag Hospital Foundation, thank you again for making a true investment in our community. Because of you, we can all rest assured that the Hoag brand of care will be there for us when we need it the most.”
