Renaissance Hoag is a 10-year plan to transform Hoag Hospital from one of the finest community hospitals in the country to a world class medical center with a community focus. Led by world-renowned interventional neuroradiologist Michael Brant-Zawadzki, M.D., executive medical director, Hoag Neuroscience Institute (HNI) is continuing to implement important strategic advances.

- HNI appointed David Brown, M.D., stroke fellowship trained and regional physician leader, as Medical Director of the stroke program
- HNI selected Christopher Duma, M.D., as Medical Director for Hoag Brain Tumor Program. Dr. Duma treats more brain tumors than anyone in the Western United States.
- HNI recruited world renowned clinician and researcher William Rod Shankle, M.D., as Program Director to lead Alzheimer’s and dementia program.
- HNI recruited C. Phillip O’Carroll, M.D., a renowned local neurologist with significant expertise in the complex interaction between the mind and body as Medical Director of Neurobehavioral Medicine program.
- HNI recruited Daniel Bandari, M.D., former director of USC MS Center, to lead Hoag’s comprehensive MS program as Director of Multiple Sclerosis Center.

Technology and Facilities
- Hoag is the first in Southern California to install the Gamma Knife, Perfexion, the world’s most advanced tool for the minimally invasive treatment of brain tumors.
- Hoag opened the Hausman Advanced Technology Pavilion, a patient-centered facility housing the area’s most sophisticated imaging and diagnostic tools for brain tumors and other neurological conditions.
- HNI is developing a site for its comprehensive facility offering patients one-stop access to each specialty area of care [In process – Expected Complete, Summer 2010]
- HNI is Consolidating in-patient cases in the neurosciences on 9th floor of the West Tower to facilitate more coordinated physician and nursing care [In process – Expected Complete, Fall 2010]

Programs
- HNI began a functional neurosurgery program under the direction of Richard Kim, M.D., who is working with neurohospitalists to improve care of Hoag’s epilepsy patients.
- Hoag began inpatient and outpatient pain program under the leadership of Medhat Mikhael, M.D.
- HNI has strengthened connection with Alzheimer’s Family Service Center through in-patient UniHealth funding of the Memory Tool Kit project that has improved patient comfort.
- HNI has continued its relationship with the National Parkinson’s Foundation and grant to provide outpatient education with Janet Chance, M.D., Director of Parkinson's & Movement Disorders Program, providing leadership.
- HNI has developed “Brain Boot Camp” and imaging studies for early detection of disease.
- Hoag has expanded research activities and participation in international clinical trials (First federally funded research project for stroke and aneurysm.)
- HNI agreed to train UC Irvine neurosurgery residents on Hoag Gamma Knife.

Accolades
- Hoag was named among top 5 percent of stroke programs in the U.S.
- Hoag was granted “Primary Stroke Center Gold Seal of Approval” after an unannounced survey by the Joint Commission; Hoag was given the designation with no suggestions for improvement.
- Hoag treats over 500 stroke and aneurysm inpatients each year which is the second largest volume in the state.
