Gifts at Work
Despite the ongoing nursing drought, Hoag continues to recruit and retain the best and brightest nurses through our nursing education facilities and programs. The partnership between Hoag and the community through the Choose Nursing, Choose Hoag (CNCH) campaign has generated funding for professorships, nursing scholarships, specialty education and the building of the Marion Knott Nursing Education Center. A few highlights of CNCH accomplishments made possible by your transformational generosity include:
Professorships
Over the past several years Hoag has invested significantly in nursing education and, since the inception of CNCH in April 2004, over 536 nurses have received training from 42 CNCH supported professors in eight local nursing schools. Nurses trained in those schools do part of their clinical rotations at Hoag. This has exposed many students to the benefits of working at Hoag and dramatically improved nursing recruitment.
Scholarships
There is a proven link between education and quality patient care. Scholarships through CNCH are one of the most impactful ways Hoag helps nurses advance their careers and deliver the best patient care available anywhere. CNCH awarded 29 scholarships in 2010. These scholarships, made possible through generous contributions from the community, are granted in recognition of talent, achievement and dedication to nursing excellence.
Nursing Conferences – Annual Oncology Nursing Conference
Thanks to generous donor support, Hoag hosts a series of annual conferences that focus on various specialty areas of nursing. Among the most notable is the “Embracing Excellence in Oncology Nursing Practice” Conference which hosts radiation and oncology nurses from all over the western U.S., as well as pharmacists and nursing students interested in specializing in oncology. Designed to address the practical issues and clinical challenges encountered daily by oncology nurses, the conference includes sessions on new technologies, the latest in treatment options, symptom management and side effects.
Marion Knott Nursing Education Center
Featuring classrooms and hands-on training space equipped with the most advanced technology, the Marion Knott Nursing Education Center is designed to enhance nursing skills and education at Hoag. The Center, unique in the region, make the massive annual “housewide mandatories” training possible, and contribute greatly to its success. Throughout the year, the center serves as a venue to educate and hone the skills of Hoag’s nursing staff and new hires as well as nursing students from area colleges performing clinical rotations at Hoag.
Mother-Baby Simulator Provides Hands-on Training
Thanks to the generosity of CNCH donors, Hoag Women’s Health Institute has a new hands-on way to conduct labor and delivery training. Funds raised through CNCH have purchased life-sized mother and baby patient simulators named Noelle® and Newborn Hal®. Noelle is life-like and fully functional with all of the physiological responses of a laboring mother including breathing, pulse rate and contractions. She can be programmed to deliver normally or with delivery complications such as breech presentations and emergency C-section. Newborn Hal breathes, cries and grunts and can be used to simulate normal newborn behaviors as well as distress.
