Hoag Emergency Departrment Renovation and Expansion
Overview
Increased demand is stretching patient care capabilities in Hoag's Emergency Department. In 2005, 59,000 patients were treated and this total will grow to more than 71,000 by 2012. In addition, there has been an increase in the number of patients with chest pain, breathing difficulty, or abdominal complaints who require constant monitoring and extensive testing. All of these factors can contribute to longer waits and higher stress for patients and families.
Hoag Emergency Department Renovation and Expansion
The Emergency Department renovation and expansion project will increase the number of patient beds from the current 30 to 52 separate rooms. The layout will also be revised into five pods of 10 beds each with totally independent support services. The project will require a seismic structural upgrade and a six-stage phased renovation and expansion process that will not interrupt services. Construction will be completed over a 30-36 month period.
This renovation will create a greatly improved patient experience with faster and more private service. Each new room will be private with no curtain walls. The rooms will also allow the medical staff to adapt and adjust the use of space to patient need by being able to shift capabilities back and forth between fast track treatment for minor injuries and more intense and complex patient treatments. The expanded waiting room will be more pleasant and comfortable with a calm décor and a children’s play area. The improved exterior will have an expanded covered entrance with improved traffic flow and valet parking.
The state-of-the-art design and layout, along with a 70% increase in beds, will improve operating efficiency and reduce waits and delays in patient treatment. In addition, we can minimize “emergency saturation triage” status, which can result in patient diversion to other facilities. When combined with the concurrent renovation and expansion of the Radiology Department, we will provide better and faster access to imaging services vital to leading-edge emergency care.
This project will have an immediate and lasting impact on emergency care in our community and philanthropic support will be important to its success. For more information, contact Floyd Harmon at the Hoag Hospital Foundation, 949-764-7213 or floyd.harmon@hoaghospital.org.
