Specialty Centers
Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women and the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women. Under the direction of Drs. Gary Levine and Lincoln Snyder, the Hoag Cancer Center assembles a multidisciplinary team from various specialties to deliver the best care available increasing survival and recovery. The Breast Cancer Center combines a focus on screening, early detection and a dedication to evaluation of breast disease and radiographic screening to greatly improve the delivery of current and new innovative therapies for the benefit of patients at the Hoag Cancer Center.

Lung Cancer
Lung cancer continues to be a leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, and is the second most commonly diagnosed and treated cancer at Hoag Hospital. The result is that the five-year relative survival rate for lung cancer patients diagnosed and/or managed at Hoag Cancer Center is 50% higher than the national figure. The Hoag Cancer Center team provides cancer patients with every diagnostic and therapeutic advantage and a comprehensive approach to cancer care.

Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, and the third most frequent cause of cancer mortality with an estimated 56,300 deaths. Each year, more than 150 patients with newly-diagnosed colorectal cancer are managed by physicians in the Hoag Colorectal Cancer Program. The management of colorectal cancers typically involves a variety of specialists including colon and rectal surgeons, radiation and medical oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, and gastroenterologists.

Gynecologic Cancer
Gynecologic cancers require a treatment combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation from gynecologic oncologists who are highly trained specialists. Hoag has been successful in battling gynecologic cancer because of a comprehensive approach to cancer care that gives patients access to the most advanced treatment options available today. Hoag’s five-year relative survival rates for uterine, ovarian and cervical cancers exceed national averages by approximately seven percentage points. Cancer treatment involves emotional and spiritual care as well. Through a gynecologic cancer support group, Hoag brings education, support and hope to women faced with the unique challenges of gynecologic cancer.

Brain Cancer
Hoag offers the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating brain tumors. Many of our treatment options are available at only a few select hospitals nationwide. Sophisticated Neuroimaging techniques are used to provide a detailed visual map of the brain. During surgery, intraoperative navigational equipment further assists in identifying the parts of the brain critical for motor, sensory, speech, visual and memory functions. These two technologies allow neurosurgeons to remove more of the tumor with less impact to the patient. In addition, the Hoag/UCI Gamma Knife Center is Orange County’s premiere facility dedicated to non-invasive brain surgery for select patients with targeted neurological problems.

Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the single most prevalent type of cancer among American men. Nearly one out of six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime and all men are at risk for developing the disease. The clearest risk factor is age. About 70% of men diagnosed with prostate cancer are over the age of 65. Hoag physicians rank among the most skilled and knowledgeable in the world. The team of physicians includes urologic surgeons, radiation and medical oncologists, radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and pathologists.

The Cell Biology Laboratory
The Cell Biology Laboratory houses world class scientific projects that include autologous vaccines, dendric cell work, adoptive cellular therapy, stem cells, and the growth of tumor cell lines for future clinical trial development. The availability of promising new treatments and therapies in the form of clinical trials gives patients and their physicians additional options. Scientists work closely with physicians in a “bench to bedside” approach to design and apply new therapies that may potentially help our cancer patients.

As Renaissance Hoag develops, recruitment will begin to attract top experts to lead additional centers targeting site specific cancers. These people will provide the leadership to expand and develop the site specific model envisioned for Hoag Cancer Center.
