Hoag Hospital recently announced a $16 million gift has been received from the George Hoag Family Foundation, a philanthropic organization based in Santa Monica, California. The gift is the second largest in hospital history and will support Hoag Cancer Center, a Hoag Hospital Center of Excellence, and a burgeoning diabetes program.

“Hoag Hospital is expanding to meet the growing health care needs of the region, and cancer and diabetes are certainly areas of focus with growing prevalence in our community,” said Richard Afable, M.D., Hoag Hospital president and CEO. “We are extremely grateful and proud to receive the continued support of the George Hoag Family Foundation, which has a tradition of commitment to the care and well being of this community. Without the strong support of benefactors like the George Hoag Family Foundation, we would not be able to provide the highest-quality care Hoag Hospital is known for to our patients and the communities we serve.”

The $16 million gift is the largest single gift that the George Hoag Family Foundation has given to any organization and furthers the commitment of the foundation to support the provision of health care services to the southern California community.

“Hoag Hospital continues to be a significant community asset, and we believe in the hospital’s vision to expand its world-class health care services and become a regional center of referral for all of southern California and beyond,” said Charles Smith, George Hoag Family Foundation executive director. “Our contribution is our way of helping make this vision a reality. We are pleased to provide support for Hoag Hospital that will help achieve continued successes in cancer care and also lead to great developments in the care and management of diabetes.”

Hoag Cancer Center is the primary beneficiary receiving $15 million of the gift. The George Hoag Family Foundation was instrumental in the building of the Patty and George Hoag Cancer Center, contributing the lead gift in 1989 for its construction. Since its opening in 1991, Hoag Cancer Center has developed an outstanding reputation as a top provider of cancer care, earning accolades on both a national and regional level for its excellence in cancer treatment and management.

To meet the demonstrated community need, the cancer center expansion plans include the addition of new site-specific programs and the physicians, staff and personnel required to manage them. The existing building is slated for a complete remodel and an addition of approximately 40,000 square feet of space. The remodeling and new construction will create additional physician office space and new patient treatment areas.

The gift also includes $5 million designated for an endowment to provide for the medical director of Hoag Cancer Center in honor of Grace E. Hoag, one of the hospital’s founders.

“Our existing cancer center has put into place a structure and framework that provides patients the latest and best in cancer care,” stated Robert O. Dillman, M.D., F.A.C.P., Hoag Cancer Center medical and scientific director. “The evolution of site-specific cancer care has necessitated growth and expansion at Hoag Cancer Center. With the generosity of the Hoag Family Foundation, we can begin expanding and deepening our scope of care while maintaining the level of service and commitment to patients that our reputation is built upon.”

In addition to supporting the cancer center, $1 million of the gift will help fund a new diabetes program in development at Hoag Hospital, which aims to ensure that all members of the community have timely access to expert diabetes prevention, care and education.

The George Hoag Family Foundation has longstanding ties to Hoag Hospital, having provided the funds needed to begin construction of the hospital in 1950. The foundation was established by George Hoag, Sr., an early partner in the J.C. Penney Company, his wife, Grace, and their son George Hoag II, and has maintained a strong connection with Hoag Hospital through the years.
