Medical Director, Kris V. Iyer, M.D.
Kris V. Iyer, M.D. graduated in Medicine and Surgery from University of Bombay. Having completed residency in Internal Medicine and Neurology in India he obtained a Doctorate in Medicine. He then went to England and trained further in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. He developed his interest in diabetes during his training in England. In addition to being a family practitioner in England, he worked in a diabetes clinic with a large patient population at the local hospital in Stevenage, England.
Dr. Iyer moved to the U.S. in 1981, and trained in Internal Medicine at East Tennessee State University and completed his endocrinology fellowship in 1986 at UCI. He started his practice at Hoag Hospital soon after his fellowship. Since coming to Hoag Hospital, Dr. Iyer has been involved with patient improvement activities as a member of the emergency room, cancer, medical executive and judicial review committees. He was the Chairman of the Department of Medicine for two terms and was elected Chief of Staff from 2001 to 2003. Dr. Iyer, with the assistance of medical staff leadership, was involved in the development of the intensivists program, hospitalists program, Disclosure policy, and Clinical and Sentinel events policy. He chaired the credentials committee before being elected to the hospital’s Board of Directors. He serves on the finance, facilities and building and strategic planning committees of the Board of Directors. Dr. Iyer has attended many advanced training courses in quality and is a member of many professional associations. He is on the advisory body and speakers’ bureau of drug and device manufacturers.
Dr.Iyer has been dedicated to improving diabetes care at Hoag Hospital for many years. He helped the medication error reduction team develop a standardized insulin order set and participated in the development of intravenous insulin treatment protocols to care for critically ill patients. Recently he led the Diabetes Care Improvement Team to transform the care of patients with diabetes at Hoag. The recommendations from the team have helped to reduce variations and to improve care at the hospital.
Dr. Iyer has been the voluntary medical advisor to the Hoag Diabetes Education Program and was recently appointed medical director of the Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes Center at Hoag.
President and Chief Executive Officer, Richard Afable, M.D., M.P.H.
Richard Afable, M.D., M.P.H., is President and Chief Executive Officer of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. Hoag is a 498-bed, not-for-profit, faith-based acute care hospital located in Newport Beach, California. As Orange County’s largest and preeminent independent hospital, Hoag offers a comprehensive mix of healthcare services, including Centers of Excellence in cancer, heart and vascular, orthopedics and women’s health services. HealthGrades in 2005 named Hoag as one of the top 5% of hospitals nationwide in orthopedic care and cardiac services. Hoag has over 4000 employees, more than 1000 medical staff, almost $600M in annual revenue and $1.4B in assets.
Formerly, Dr. Afable was the Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Catholic Health East, an East Coast health system comprised of 31 acute care hospitals and 47 long-term care facilities. Before joining Catholic Health East, Dr. Afable was the founder and President/CEO of Preferred Physician Partners (PPP), an Ohio-based physician practice management company that supported physician groups and provider networks. He has also served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Wake Forest University from 1991 to 1996 and as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University from 1983 to 1991. Early in his career, Dr. Afable spent ten years in private practice in Chicago, specializing in internal medicine and geriatrics.
Dr. Afable received his BS degree from Loyola University in Chicago and an MD from the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine. He obtained his MPH degree from the University of Illinois School of Public Health and a certificate in business administration from Villanova University.
