552 Club
The 552 Club is a community-based hospital support group of individual volunteers and donors dedicated to promoting and financially supporting Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. To fulfill this mission, the 552 Club attracts, inspires and motivates individuals to become volunteers and donors for Hoag Hospital. It also encourages others to make a long-term commitment to Hoag Hospital through ongoing financial support and/or personal involvement; provides opportunities for members to develop leadership skills and take active leadership roles in philanthropy for Hoag Hospital; provides education for members and residents of Orange County about Hoag Hospital and the services provided; and develops and implements quality fund-raising and friend-raising programs to promote Hoag Hospital in Orange County.
The oldest and largest of Hoag Hospital's volunteer financial support groups, the 552 Club has raised more than $37 million for the hospital since its founding in 1966. Each March the club presents the Toshiba Classic, Orange County's exclusive PGA Tour-sanctioned event. In the last 10 years, the Toshiba Classic raised more than $10 million, including $1 million each year from 2000 through 2007 - the largest charitable donations from a single event in the 25-year history of the Champions Tour.
A nucleus of 13 men made up the organizing group. They include Al Auer, James Berkshire, John Carr, Roy Carver, Marshall Duffield, Elmer Farnsworth, Ned Hill, Dr. Norm Loats, John Macnab, Paul Nissen, Fred Schoepe, Edgar Witmer, and John Vibert.
Today, the grand tradition of philanthropy envisioned by the club's founders is still in place as is the original membership fee of $100. Each year, the 552 Club invites its members and the community to join in support of their hospital. A variety of social and sporting events help to raise friends and funds for Hoag Hospital as well as to invite wide public participation.
The 552 Club adopts Hoag Hospital's fund-raising projects as personal priorities. They have raised funds for construction of the Patty and George Hoag Cancer Center, construction of Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute's Cardiac Outpatient Center, expansion and renovation of the emergency care unit, operating room renovation, computerized patient care information system, and Hoag Hospital's Endowment Fund. Its newest accomplishment is the completion of the goal to raise $10 million for the Sue and Bill Gross Women's Pavilion. The 552 Club is now focusing on raising funds for Hoag's five Centers of Excellence and the renovation of the emergency care unit.
